Stand Up: Let’s Show Our Young Women It Means To Be Self-Sufficient

Jamie Lynn Spears, a Nickelodeon star and teen sister to Britney Spears, made headlines this week when she delivered a baby. The contest deciding whether the press is fascinated with her birth due to her famous older sister or because of her young age is still at debate. Now a new class of small town girls are making headlines this weekend. It sounds like a lead that would only be in a movie : A surprising number high school girls who haven’t reached the age of 16 made a pact to get pregnant and raise their children together. This isn’t an internet hoax or a ridiculous gossip rumor that you’ve see on television and movies(Juno, Knocked Up) . At Gloucester High School in Massachusetts is where 17 girls made a pact at the beginning at the school year to get pregnant. Time and CNN reports that school officials started looking into this matter in early October when they noticed an unusual amount of girls were absent due to getting pregnancy results at clinics.

“In Gloucester, perched on scenic Cape Ann, the economy has always

depended on a strong fishing industry. But in recent years, such jobs have all but disappeared overseas, and with them much of the community’s wherewithal. “Families are broken,” says school superintendent Christopher Farmer. “Many of our young people are growing up directionless.” Farmer also says when many of the girls got the results to their test they gave each other high fives.A scene from Juno, Courtesy of Fox

What are we teaching our children? Are we here for our young girls? Do we owe it to ourselves to blame it on the television and internet. Why aren’t are kids getting the love and fulfillment by the world that’s surrounding them and not what they see on their screens. The problems of the World start with us. Only we can change how our children perceive themselves by giving them a direction. We have to be more than just parents, big sisters and big brothers. In order to do that we have to show these kids that there is more to life than making quick money and having a baby to just have around.

That’s absolutely ridiculous! We have got to get our priorities in order.

That’s awful,I’m a teenager and I would never want to get pregnant just to be popular with some crowd,I think teen pregnancy opens parent’s eyes up to see how much they don’t pay attention to their young adults lives.Pregnancy forces kids to grow up too soon.Instead of partying with their friends they have a baby to change and instead of having fun their doing what they should be in 10 years from then.Use condoms and birth control!!!My god.
